How to File for Form 2290

There are two ways to file the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) form. One is through traditional paper filing. If you go for this option, you have to call your local Taxpayer’s Assistance Center (TAC) and request for the document. You must set an appointment with them so you can start processing the tax form. The process may take some time; you have to fill out several forms and submit the necessary documents.

The other method is through electronic filing or e-filing. You can do this by using the document provided on the IRS website. If you want an easier IRS 2290 filing, you may hire a third party service provider to do the job for you. This will make the process faster and easier especially if you are filing for a number of vehicles.

Either way, you must prepare the necessary information. Some of the basic information you need to fill out include the business name and information, total number of vehicles to be filed for, and their respective Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). The gross weight is another thing you must look into. Keep in mind that every state has different requirements in checking the gross taxable weight of vehicles. Most states though require you to indicate the specific gross weights, gross weight category, and the actual loaded weights.
