About Jobcentre Budgeting Loans

May 16, 2012 by  Filed under: Loans

The maximum Budgeting Loan that any one household can apply for is £1500.00, however this can be limited by any other outstanding debt that you have with the Social Fund department (this can be made up of Budgeting or Crisis loans)

Additionally, the amount of help that you can apply for can be effected by any capital assets that you have, including, but not limited to savings or investments that are worth a combined total of £1000 or more if you are 18-59 or £2000 or more if you are aged 60 or over.

To qualify for a Budgeting Loan you must be one a qualifying benefit at the time of application, and must also have an unbroken claim history of 26 weeks or more. Qualifying benefits are Income support, Income related Employment and Support allowance or Income Based Job Seekers Allowance.

Not all items that you may need are covered, but the following list has been published by the Department of Work and Pensions as being acceptable items to be considered.

You can only claim for:

  • furniture/household equipment.
  • clothing/footwear.
  • rent in advance.
  • removal expenses to secure new accommodation.
  • improvement, maintenance and security of the home.
  • travelling expenses.
  • expenses connected with seeking or re-entering work.
  • hire purchase debts and other debts for any of the above items.
  • maternity items or items for a new baby.
  • meeting some of the costs of a relative’s funeral.

To apply, you will need to complete a form called a SF500 and send it to the Benefit Centre dealing with your post code area, the forms can be obtained at your Local Jobcentre Plus office and are issued with a prepaid envelope, addressed to the correct Benefit Centre.

Once your application has been accepted it can take up to 10 working days to process your form and make a decision, and you will be notified of the outcome in writing. If you are successful, you will be sent an offer letter detailing the amount that you have been granted and the period that you have to repay the loan

If you accept the repayment arrangements and return your acceptance letter, you can expect to wait a further 10 working days until payment is made into your chosen bank account.

Along with a Budgeting Loan, additional help that you can apply for from the discretionary Social Fund includes Crisis Loans and Community care grants that can be obtained by calling the Crisis Loan telephone number or by contact your local Jobcentre and covers immediate living expenses that you are unable to meet due to unforeseen circumstances or emergencies.
