Requesting an Installment Agreement With the IRS

December 8, 2009 by  Filed under: Taxes

If you owe taxes that you cannot pay, there are options. One of the more popular options is to request an Installment Agreement with the IRS.

The IRS web site says: Taxpayers who owe $25,000 or less in combined taxes, penalties and interest can use the new Online payment agreement, known as OPA. If you do not want to set up a payment plan online, you can call the number on the notice that the IRS sent you, informing you of how much you owe

To request and Installment Agreement, you use Form 9465. The instruction on the form tells you where to mail the form.

If you owe more than $25,000, you may still qualify for an installment agreement, but it will be necessary to complete a Form 433F, Collection Information Statement. This is NOT a form you want to complete without the help of a tax professional.

The Form 433F is easy enough to complete, however, it’s the particulars that can make a dramatic difference in how much the IRS determines, you should pay each month.

For example, one mistake taxpayers make, is added in the cable bill as a monthly expense. Big mistake. The cable bill is not considered a necessity, and the IRS, may decide that the amount spent on the cable bill each month, could be spent on the tax bill!

The IRS will give you an option of which day of the month you want your monthly installment due, as long as the payment is made prior to the 28th of the month.

It is easier for the tax payer and for the IRS if you use the automatic payment option through your checking account.

It usually takes the IRS 30 days to approve or deny your payment plan / Installment Agreement

The larger the payments you make the better. Penalty and interest accrual daily, therefore you want to pay as much as you can as quickly as you can.
